Dickies Scrubs Review: The Only Brand Talking About Industrial Laundry

Most scrub marketing assumes you take your uniforms home and wash them yourself. A lot of nurses do not — plenty of facilities launder centrally, and industrial washing is a completely different kind of punishment from a domestic machine. Dickies is one of the few brands that talks about it, and if that is your situation, it should probably shape your decision.

This review uses the current official catalogue rather than treating anecdotes as proof. We have not worn-tested these garments, and we are a competitor — so everything below is drawn from Dickies' own published product information and stated specifications, checked July 2026. The industrial washing claim, and why it matters more than it sounds

Dickies describes EDS Signature as built for the pace of clinical work, with fabric that holds up through long shifts and repeated industrial washing without losing its shape or colour.

That is a specific and unusually testable-sounding claim, and it addresses a real gap. Industrial laundering means higher temperatures, harsher chemistry and mechanical agitation well beyond a domestic cycle. Fabric that is perfectly good at home can lose colour, shape or stretch recovery quickly under it.

So there is a question that determines a lot and that almost nobody asks before ordering: who washes your scrubs?

• Your facility launders them centrally. Durability under industrial conditions outranks nearly everything else. Soft hand feel is irrelevant if the garment is grey and shapeless by month four.
• You wash them at home. The industrial claim is not doing much for you, and you can weight comfort, colour and fit more heavily.

Worth being straight about the limit of what we can tell you: neither Dickies nor anyone else publishes a wash-cycle count, and we have not tested it. The claim is a positioning statement, not a measured figure. But it is at least a claim aimed at a real problem, which is more than most of the category offers.

The collections, and which ones are four-way stretch

• EDS Signature — the durability-focused line, positioned around surviving clinical pace and repeated washing.
• EDS Essentials — described with four-way stretch; tops, pants, jackets and zip-front options.
• Dynamix — four-way stretch, positioned for mobility.
• Xtreme Stretch — four-way stretch, spandex blends.
• Balance — described as a lighter, more athletic-inspired fit.

Three of the five explicitly state four-way stretch, which is a better hit rate than most multi-line brands manage. If you have read our guide to stretch, you know why that distinction matters: clinical work is not one-directional, and two-way stretch resists you exactly when you squat.

What none of them publish — and this is universal, us included — is recovery. Stretch is how far it moves; recovery is whether it comes back. That is what decides whether knees bag out by month two, and the only way to judge it is the fabric in your hands.

Sizing

Dickies is listed across a wide span — retailers carry the range from XXS to 5XL, with petite and plus options.

That is broader than ours at both ends: we run XS–2XL with petite and tall lengths on selected styles. If you sit at either extreme of the size range, that is likely the deciding factor before any fabric consideration.

As with any multi-line brand, confirm the range for the specific collection rather than assuming it is uniform across all five.

The multi-collection trade-off, again

Five lines means five fabric behaviours and five sets of colour renderings. A colour name in EDS Signature will not reliably match the same name in Dynamix, because different fabrics take dye differently.

Practical rule, same as with any brand running multiple platforms: keep your top and pant within one collection if you want them to look like a set.

When Dickies may suit you

• Your facility launders your uniforms centrally.
• You need XXS, or 3XL and above.
• You want four-way stretch and a wide choice of which line delivers it.
• You want a zip-front jacket from the same line as your scrubs.
• You replace uniforms on a budget cycle and want durability weighted over hand feel.

A narrower range may suit you better if you want one fabric you can reorder without checking which line it came from.

Compare the garment, not the brand image

• Sizes XS–2XL, petite and tall lengths on selected styles. Narrower than Dickies at both ends.
• One fabric — four-way stretch, moisture-wicking, wrinkle-resistant, certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100 at finished-garment level. No collection-matching problem.
• No industrial-laundry claim. Our fabric is specified for normal domestic care — cold wash, no softener, low heat. If your hospital launders centrally, we are not the obvious choice and we would rather say so.
• 22 core colours, every colour in every cut, held across seasons.
• Four leg shapes — jogger, cargo, tapered, straight-leg — and five necklines. No jackets.

Buying checklist

1. Establish who launders your uniforms before anything else.
2. Identify the collection, then the style.
3. Confirm two-way or four-way stretch for that line.
4. Keep top and pant within one collection if colour matters.
5. Check the size range and inseam for that specific line.
6. Test shoulders, hip, rise, thigh and hem. Waist alone is not enough.
